Has artificial intelligence reached a temporary plateau?

ChatGPT, Midjourney, Bard, and all manner of other artificial intelligence tools feel like they’ve only just arrived.

But looking beyond the tools to the money and patents it makes clear the development of AI has been building for well over a decade and now also appears that AI has, for the moment at least, reached a plateau, in relation to investment and patents.

One area that is growing is private industry virtually taking the reigns of AI research and development from a broad suite of Academia.
